True automotive treasures are rarely presented on a silver platter. We came across this 1998 Mercedes-Benz SL500 online, cloaked in substandard, rushed photography, that likely drove casual buyers to keep scrolling. But where others saw a poorly formatted ad, our background work revealed a gem: a final-year, M119-powered R129 that had spent its life under the excellent care. The car was being sold by an elderly couple that was simply too old to drive the car, and they had previously bought it from their closest friend. In total, the car spent nearly 15 years under the care of the two owners. The thing that likely put off most buyers were the weird angle pictures and the location, some four hours northeast of Montreal. We decided to go look at the car in person before purchasing, and it was in beautiful condition, flawless paint, excellent history, and no faults. The SL is one of the best shows of Bruno Sacco's design and overengineering obsession, here in arguably it's best year and engine combination. We ensured that the car did not have the notoriously fragile ADS hydraulic suspension and that the high maintenance electrical soft top was in perfect condition, and we made a move on the car. The owner could not have been happier having a perfectly maintained piece of history. At around 13,000CAD, this car was a crazy bargain.

DER ZUSTAND
This SL500 presents beautifully, carrying only the minor, authentic character marks of a classic that has been driven and appreciated. There is only one minor prior accident on this car, the seller that we sourced the car from had a minor mishap at a gas station, but all was fixed perfectly, the vehicle history report presented cleanly with excellent history. While the original digital listing lacked paperwork, our due diligence uncovered a documented pattern of routine care from its previous ownership, totalling less than 62,000 miles (sub 100,000km), an excellent number for a near 28-year old. The electro-hydraulic roof cycle operates smoothly, the unique Bose audio setup punches cleanly, and the mechanical essentials are entirely dialed in. Free of complex electronic suspension headaches and completely pristine on paper with absolutely no rust, this classic silver cruiser is perfectly prepared to take on the summer heat. The cherry on top were the excellent 6-disc CD player and cassette player, both operating perfectly.
